Provo Canyon School, based in Provo, Utah, is a place to send “troubled children”. This school has many survivors, but one that is the most famous is celebrity Paris Hilton. Hilton recently testified in court against the school on Feb. 9.

“I don’t know if my nightmares will ever go away, but I do know that there are hundreds of thousands of kids going through this right now,” Hilton said. “And maybe if I stop their nightmares, it will stop mine too.”

Hilton has painted a gruesome schooling experience for troubled children and what they went through at Provo Canyon. When you are enrolled into Provo, they come to your house in the middle of the night and take you from bed. They give you no warning or tell you what is going on, and you think you are being kidnapped. Hilton now suffers from nightmares and post traumatic stress disorder from the night she was kidnapped from the comfort of her home and taken to the Provo Canyon school.

Doing this to people at such a young age will cause permanent damage to their brains. What I am concerned about is why parents think this is an option to do to their children. No teen is so unmanageable that they have to be taken away from their family in the middle of the night.

Hilton reported she was verbally, mentally and physically abused on a daily basis. These teens had to live like prisoners. Provo is still an active school. Teens are still going through this right now. Hilton is doing everything in her power to shut down these horrible places.

Provo has had many accounts of mistreatment and sexual assaults reported, but no one has done anything about it. The school is marketed as this amazing place to send your teens to in order to reform their behavior. Hilton was a party girl in her teens and her behavior was nothing that would warrant the treatment she and thousands of others were subject to.

Teens are forced to take medication to make them more manageable. They are frequently abused, beaten, restrained, strangled and thrown at walls.

At Provo you have no privacy at all — you are being watched 24 hours a day. To shower you have to be monitored. Communication to the outside world is very limited and watched as well. They would use drugging as discipline in order to keep the students tame so they wouldn’t lash out. Punishment for acting out was being stripped of clothing and placed in solitary confinement, in a room sublevel with no windows, clocks or access to anyone.

The whole “troubled teen industry” needs to be dismantled. Sending your child away because you don’t want to deal with them is ridiculous, and it seems to be a rich parent culture. A normal person who is having issues with their teen doesn’t send them away. The laziness and downright abuse these parents subject their child to should be criminal punishment in itself.

I know teens can be wild, but no one deserves the day-to-day treatment they are exposed to in this type of learning environment. Talk to your kids, listen to them and try and find a middle ground that is a far better solution than the lifelong trauma kids are being exposed to at these schools. As Hilton would say, this is “Not hot”.
